It Is About The Journey

“Enjoy both the journey and the ever evolving destination!” – Hope Elizabeth Dutton

So this evening, I was catching up with an old friend and we were talking about life….when he said, “life is a journey and if I had fun along the way, then that is cool.” I couldn’t entirely disagree with him. I mean, I am a big proponent of living life with the journey in mind and not simply the destination. After all, we have been taught that it is the journey that is most important but in our western culture we also get very caught up in the destination. I personally am a journey type of gal, but of course the destination or as I prefer to think of them as “goals” are always in sight too.

I have had my fair share of journey and destination type moments here lately, as I journey with my oldest through so many destination type moments that provide me with “last” moments and bring her to many “first” moments. It is a beautiful thing to be able to be a part of and witness. All these moments leading her to the next set of journeys and goals. I am a firm believer in manifesting your destiny and I have imparted this thought process as much as possible on a newly budding young woman who is all of 18… Which means to say, she grasps it as much as her frame of reference will allow and in the really big picture, I think she is doing a pretty great job. Plus, this is HER destiny, not mine. So while I want to help guide, ultimately I don’t want my destinations to become hers simply because I thought the idea of my journey for her would be better then the one she has picked for herself. But as I am her parent, and she does look to me for guidance, sometimes I do have to lay out all the options and possible journeys toward a destination she thinks she would like to experience!

It is in these times, that I see and feel her at a crossroads, unsure of what to do or where she should go next. She may question herself, what will happen if I make a wrong turn? Which is the right way? As her parent, I feel the indecision weighing like a mantle on her shoulders and I have to remind her and myself that she will be okay! I also remind her that she needs to shut down that little pesky voice of criticism and self doubt and shut it down quick! That she has an inner compass that will always guide her properly and if it doesn’t work out, what is the worst that happens? She took another journey that she probably was meant to experience anyway. I am trying to teach her to center her thoughts, focus her attention inward and simply trust and have faith in herself and her God.

Because the reality is, as humans, we all question ourselves, “what or which choice should I make” and yet we never lack guidance. Simply because the path isn’t always clearly cut right before us doesn’t mean we shouldn’t trust and follow our inner intuition. As another friend of mine is regularly pointing out, “to have faith where fear may reside” and boy, is she ever right! We simply have to place one foot in front of the other, moving forward toward the destination with the conviction that our steps are taking us precisely where we need to go…and then we can begin to look around and have some fun along the way; because at the end of the day, that is pretty cool too. Enjoying the journeys while we reach an ever evolving destination.

“For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who searches finds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.” – Matthew 7:8
