Freedom, The Birthright of Humanity

I recently traveled internationally and as I flipped through our USA Passports, looking at previous stamps and excited about new ones to come, the following quote quite randomly caught my attention…

“The cause of freedom is not the cause of a race or a sect, a party or a class – it is the cause of humankind, the very birthright of humanity.”

– Anna Julia Cooper

This quote can be found across the top of pages 26 & 27…

In light of all that is going on in our country, I found this quote quite thought provoking because someone in our government thought enough of this very quote and what it stood for to put it there, inscribed in a very special identification document that is precious to all who possess it! This identification document is quite literally the highest form of identification in our country and it references freedom and humanity. Two things all of humankind covet!

After traveling abroad and coming home, multiple times over the decades – it occurs to me how removed and somewhat immune we can become from what freedom truly means. These thoughts, plus that quote coinciding with our country’s revered & honored Independence Day gave way to further investigation of quotes about freedom. I have compiled ten quotes honoring the depth of freedom that speak to me. These quotes are in no particular order. Yet, maybe a few will speak to a reader or two and in turn create a moment of pause and reflection about where each of us stands in this cause of humankind.

“America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.”
– Abraham Lincoln

“The history of the world is none other than the progress of the consciousness of freedom.”
– Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel

“I wish that every human life might be pure transparent freedom.”
– Simone de Beauvoir

“Conformity is the jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth.”
– John F. Kennedy

“Without freedom of thought, there can be no such thing as wisdom – and no such thing as public liberty without freedom of speech.”
– Benjamin Franklin

“Freedom is the open window through which pours the sunlight of the human spirit and human dignity.”
– Herbert Hoover

“Let us ask ourselves, ‘What kind of people do we think we are?’ And let us answer, ‘Free people, worthy of freedom and determined not only to remain so but to help others gain their freedom as well.”
– Ronald Reagan

“May we think of freedom, not as the right to do as we please, but as the opportunity to do what is right.”
– Peter Marshall

“For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.”
– Nelson Mandela

“Freedom consists not in doing what we like, but in having the right to do what we ought.”
– Pope John Paul II

Let us always remember that freedom should spread like the brightly lit colors bursting forth from the fireworks showering our country’s skies on Independence Day.
